HL French

The written Leaving Certificate French examination takes place during the June examination period, with the exact date confirmed each year by the State Examinations Commission (SEC). The oral examination takes place separately before the main written examinations.

Higher Level French assesses students across four key language skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Students develop their vocabulary, grammar and communication skills while preparing for the oral, aural, reading comprehension and written sections.

Consistency is one of the most effective ways to improve a language. Try to have regular contact with the language through vocabulary, reading, listening, writing and speaking, and use past exam questions to become familiar with the examination.

Leaving Cert Plus Higher Level French covers Reading Comprehension, the Written Section (Opinion Piece, Diary Entry, Broad Topic Questions, Short Story), the Oral and Aural exams, and Grammar Revision, with videos, notes, flashcards, exam questions and quizzes.

Start preparing early and practise speaking French regularly. Learn useful vocabulary and expressions rather than relying entirely on memorised answers, and practise responding to questions out loud.
