Frequently Asked Questions

The written Leaving Certificate Irish examinations take place during the June examination period. The Irish oral examination takes place separately before the main written exams.

Higher Level Irish assesses students across several areas, including speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as prescribed course material. Students need to develop both their understanding of Irish and their ability to communicate effectively.

The most effective approach is regular practice. Include Irish throughout your weekly study schedule and combine oral practice with vocabulary, grammar, listening, reading, prescribed material and past exam questions.

Leaving Cert Plus Higher Level Irish covers An Bhéaltriail, An Chluastuiscint, Ceapadóireacht, Reading Comprehension, Prós, Filíocht and Litríocht Bhreise, with videos, notes, flashcards, exam questions and quizzes.

Start early and practise speaking Irish regularly. Focus on understanding your answers rather than simply memorising them, and build a bank of useful vocabulary and phrases that can be adapted to different questions.
